Pure Ocean selects and supports innovative research projects to better understand and protect marine biodiversity.
With global plastic production on the rise, the Bioplastics From The Deep project explores an alternative path: developing bio-based, biodegradable materials that can replace fossil-based plastics without putting new pressure on biodiversity.
The research draws on bio-inspiration and on the remarkable properties of the beak of the European squid (Loligo vulgaris). Its SRT18 protein, at once flexible, elastic and strong, behaves like a natural thermoplastic that can be reshaped with heat. By studying its potential, the project paves the way for new biomaterials that reconcile innovation, ocean protection and human health.
